Driving across Canada is an adventure. I saw my first moose and a white headed eagle on the side of the road! I also got a great picture of Lake Superior at sunset; I'll have to post that.

Since we've been back I've been looking for a job, no luck yet on that but I have until the end of March so I won't panic just yet.

I've also been fixing up my sewing room, which will now be called my Girly Room/Studio ;O) I didn't want to invest too much money in this so I used some leftover paints we had and bought a can of oups! paint (the one they sell for 1/4 of the regular price at the hardware store because the colour didn't turn out right)and mixed my own colours. I am very happy with the results.

Here are a few pictures some with the flash and some with the overhead lights on.

I still need to make the curtains, cover my ironing board and cork board and put up my batting for my design wall. That coral took six coats to hide the darn aliens but it was SO worth it.

I love this room because of the colour but also because it cost close to nothing, I bought one gallon of bright oups! pink for 10$ and one small can of new Golden Starfish yellow for 10$. I mixed the pink with some leftover orange to get the coral colour, the yellow with some leftover white and the peach I made using the leftover coral and some more leftover white.

I already had the small shelves and brackets so I bought 2 more sets of brackets and 2 more shelves for about 15$ so I would have 6 instead of 4. In the closet we used the panel from the old IKEA armoire that was falling apart and a set of 3 brackets for 4$.

This last picture is a close up of my spice rack. My dad made it years ago and I've had it for at least 15 years, I had always used it in the kitchen but I have no room for it here so I painted it turquoise and now it's my knickknack storage. I need to buy some baby food the empty jars fit perfectly in there.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_cmUtsL9ATJQ/SYHYNp6XLoI/AAAAAAAAAPE/i0F6s8BFJNE/s400/9-natural+(flikr).jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5296752365864955522" />

Have a great day
Danielle xoxDanielle , Alberta, Canadahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17011337810557457339noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3764024931770390575.post-43528308079914284242009-01-28T12:11:00.003-07:002009-01-28T12:27:07.293-07:00Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 265px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_cmUtsL9ATJQ/SYCxg_cvUEI/AAAAAAAAANE/snkKI_vvF00/s400/3230102835_88b6233b6b_o.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5296428342133608514" />
Please read about it here: Bloggers UnitDanielle , Alberta, Canadahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17011337810557457339noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3764024931770390575.post-89557913765850183522009-01-15T08:59:00.004-07:002009-01-15T09:08:17.216-07:00Oh Boy! Well almost...I have got to be the biggest procrastinator in the universe. If I'm not under pressure nothing gets done. So that's why I still cannot believe I actually have all my Christmas machine sewing done, or at least it will be by 11pm tonight.

You see my sweetheart decided last July that he was not taking a summer holiday, so that he could get 3 weeks of at Christmas in order to drive to Quebec, and visit our family and friends we haven't seen in over a year. Now if you have ever been to Canada you know that this is a BIG country. You also know that it is a COLD country. Here in Cold Lake that means it can often go down to -45 degrees Celsius (I'm thinking that's well under zero Fahrenheit). So driving 2600 miles in the hearth of winter is no small thing. In order to arrive in time for the holidays and have a few days to rest before the festivities begin we are leaving tomorrow.

Now it's hard enough for me to get my act together before December 24th but take away 5 days and it become almost impossible. Please forget that I knew since July and that I had a very good idea by the end of September as to what I wanted to make. Please don't take into account that I had more than enough fabric to make 10 times as many gifts as I wanted to make and did not need to shop for anything. Nope, being me, I started sewing on December 5th when my son gleefully announced that there were only 2 weeks left before we left for vacation...

But I made it! All I have left to do is the hand finishing, which should occupy me during the next 4 days on the road.

Behold the Emelines:

I made 5 but couldn't show the last one so as not to ruin a surprise...

The baby girl quilt:

I sew the top to a piece of batting and quilted it in what my son calls a "cornered spiral", before attaching the dark purple minky. That way it is thick and fluffy and can be put on the floor for the baby to roll on :O)

The baby boy quilt:

Same here, bathing, quilted in strait lines and then attached dark brown minky. No walking foot by the way, my old White machine is fantastic! I plan to hand quilt around the creatures with embroydery thread during the drive.

The little girl tote bag:

I love, love, love Freshcut. In the back pocket is a not to perfect pencil roll, I made this without a patern and will have to rework this if I ever make one again because the markers I put in there keep falling out :O(

Not shown is my Mom's tote bag because she may be reading this if she hasn't lost my blog address again (Hi mom :O)) I will post pictures of it after Christmas. Also not shown are the 2 little boy tots that are being assembled while not on coffee/blog brake.

It's 3:30 pm right now and I am heading back to my sewing room. I will have more than enough time to finish sewing the binding onto the baby boy quilt and to finish assembling the little boy totes.

And tonight, while my sweetheart is busy running last minutes errands and my son finishes vacuuming the house, I will pour myself a DiSarono on the rocks and raise my glass to the procrastinators of the world. May all their Christmas sewing be done on time!

Cheers and the very best Christmas.
DanielleDanielle , Alberta, Canadahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17011337810557457339noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3764024931770390575.post-58859892913636333602008-11-20T13:56:00.010-07:002008-11-20T14:41:17.342-07:00The Jester Quilt & Why Are All my Pictures Yellow? One of the reasons my posts are few and fare appart is due to my pictures. I know the camera is not the problem, it has to do with lighting but I stile havn't figured out how to solve this. My best bet would probably be to take the pictures outside in natural light but I'm not sure how to set this up. I will work on this because yellow pictures: Yish!

Anyhoo this is another top I've finished and have added to the "Gotto Quilt" pile. I have named it the Jester quilt. Here it is on my high teck design wall which consists of a 108 wide piece of batting my bunny Maya nibbled in a few places rendering it unusable for a quilt. Tacked to the wall it's perfect for designing and I can't imagine myself putting my unassembled blocks on the floor, with the bunny and dog hair it would ruin them, so Maya actualy did me a favor of sorts...
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_cmUtsL9ATJQ/SSXQmF57e7I/AAAAAAAAALQ/6txgv57Ods4/s400/jester1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5270848291745790898" />
The fabric is Symphony by Sentimental Studios and the pattern is Jelly Diamonds by Fig Tree Quilts. This picture was taken with the flash, it's not yellow but I it's stile does not do the fabrics justice.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_cmUtsL9ATJQ/SSXShcabS8I/AAAAAAAAALY/TWNOMK3euBI/s400/PA020025.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5270850410911583170" />
I love this pattern. The instructions are clear and easy to follow and it goes together very fast. I did not put in the setting triangles because 1) the fabric I had just did play well with the rest and 2) I like the points, they give the top a carnival feel. I am considering adding tasles to the top and bottom points once it is quilted and bound.

Their is some majore streching on one side. All the pieces are bias and my seam allowances are not all the same so the edges got warped when I put the whole thing together. Hopefuly I will figure out a way to fix this and then I can quilt it. Stile I am happy with the results. Except for one or 2, all my points are lined up which make me very proud.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_cmUtsL9ATJQ/SSXVGKpBSQI/AAAAAAAAALg/Ba75lOJtv9U/s400/PA020029.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5270853240819370242" />
I consider this one a practice run because I intend to make a bigger version of this for my bedroom, I love the fabrics so much. So this will either be a lap quilt or go on the wall.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_cmUtsL9ATJQ/SSXW2f5b4oI/AAAAAAAAALo/0uXCzRsnEq0/s400/PA020028.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5270855170670715522" />
Have to get back to my Christmas sewing. In fact I've been pretty busy working on my X-mas gift list. This proves there may be hope for me yet because I usually never think about X-mas gifts until the 15th of December!

This is the last top I finished. There was another one before this but I don't have a picture yet, I will take one later today and post it tomorrow along with pictures of my current project, but I digress...

I started this one last March. I had all the fabric cut and the strips assembled into pairs. I made it from fat quarters but initially it was a jelly roll pattern (Gridlock from Pieces From My Heart by Sandy Gervais) The fabric is also by Sandy, from two lines, Fall Back in Time and Mix & Mingle.
My first intention was to make this as part of a his & hers set for our bedroom but then I changed my mind completely about the colors and so this will probably be for my son once it is quilted. Pardon my absence, I have been sewing and will have pictures soon. But this morning I discovered something that I just had to share right away because it makes me absolutely giddy!

So without further ado let me share with you the story of Ms. White and the pop Singer.

I met Ms. White at a garage sale about 7 or 8 years ago, she was in her late twenties at the time. She was not what you would call pretty and she looked like she had been through a lot and I felt we had that in common. She was looking for a new place to stay and since I had been looking for someone reliable and affordable to assist me in my Halloween costume projects, I decided to offer her the job. She was only asking for 5$ so I figured I was getting the better end of the deal regardless of her future performance, but I need not have worried, Ms. White was more than up to the task working her way as easily true delicate satins, cheep cottons or jeans.
When we moved across the country, space was limited in the family vehicle but I would not hear of leaving her behind and so Ms. White made the long trip with us from Quebec to Alberta, squeezed into the back of the SUV. Unfortunately even with her tough constitution, Ms White suffered from the ride and when we arrived she had a hard time getting back to work. She just did not seem to have the heart anymore.

That's when I discovered the pop Singer. I met her at Wal-Mart, she was young and she looked hip, she was looking for a job and although she did not look half as tough as Ms. White, I thought she might do until I could nurse my old friend back to health. So I took her home and she has been pretty good at most of the tasks I have asked her to perform. But she still cannot take on as much as my old friend. She just doesn't have the same constitution. However, this young thing owns a bunch of hip gadgets that Ms. White never possessed, she has a zipper foot, a button foot, a 1/4 inch foot, a darning foot she even has a walking foot. She just does not have the strength to use them well.

Such a shame, such a waist I though. Here is this young thing with all the nifty gadgets and there is my old friend who could sure use them but has none. But then this morning, out of the blue I decided to hand Ms. White one of the pop Singer's gadgets and see if she could maybe use it. Well lo and behold she can!!!

Do you know what this means? This means that I might not have to send most of my quilts to a long arm quilter because I now have a machine that has the strength AND attachments needed to do this myself. It also means I won't need to spend a fortune on a new machine as I had been considering.

This morning, I am a happy quilter!
Have a great day

DanielleDanielle , Alberta, Canadahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17011337810557457339noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3764024931770390575.post-37689706092584839182008-06-26T08:23:00.003-06:002008-06-26T08:30:58.378-06:00Please go take a look at this...I would post the clip but I seem to be unable to post a video. Well most of them anyway. I must admit that mosquito's and flies gross me out to no end, and having a spider ON me kinda freaks me out in a hair raising kind of way. But other then that I am totally in.

So in the interest of further education and spreading the love, here is a post about some pretty bugs. The One-Eyed Sphinx and the Colombia Silkmoth. Both of them are common to this region of the world and quite interesting to look at.

Here is the One Eyed Sphinx, or the Smerinthus cerisyi:
He is about 1.5 inches long and has a wing span of about 2-3 inches. The interesting thing about him is that he blends perfectly to a tree and that if you you don't stop and observe, you will totally miss his beautiful under wings, because at rest they are usually folded under his over wings( those are probably not the scientific names for these but I'm sure you understand what I mean).

And here is The Colombia Silkmoth, or the Hyalophora columbia:

This is a big guy, his body is as large as my index finger in diameter, about 1.5 inches long and his wing span is about 5 inches. His body is fury with cream and brown stripes.

Moths are allot less skittish then butterflies, if you hold your finger in front of them they will often climb on board and let you take a good look at them. You can do them a favor and release them on to a tree trunk or a shaded wall as they usually prefer not to be in the direct sun light and seem to be a little dumbstruck when they are, landing somewhere they could get "squashed". Just don't touch their wings, they are fragile.

If you would like to know a bit more about moths, and see some absolutely beautiful photographs ( some moths are even more colorful then butterflies) i have posted a few links on the side bar in the Take a Look section for your enjoyment.

Have a great fathers day!
DanielleDanielle , Alberta, Canadahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17011337810557457339noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3764024931770390575.post-50220127874157043192008-06-09T16:24:00.007-06:002008-12-09T02:32:38.973-07:00Eat your heart out, I`m having Figs & Plums....Figs & Plums Fabric that is:

I know it's not fair...
But try and take comfort in the fact that all my sewing equipment is packed and all I can do is staire at these babies and drool.
I know :o( But seriously, if you are a Fig Tree fan as I am you will NOT want to miss these. So here goes.

Exibit one; my first completed quilt top started with this pile of beauties, the Fresh Cut fabrics by Heather Bailey:

And became this ( the patern is also from Heather Bailey all bias cut and sewn!):

Here are a few pictures of the points and corners:

Not perfect, but I`m stile pretty happy with the results and I LOVE the top. Now I need to finish it but I want to get my old White sewing machine fixed so I can machine quilt it. I don`t think the cheap Signer would hold up.

So until then I am working on something from this Chocolat Lollipop fabric by Anna Maria Horner:

And here is a picture I call Easter Bunny because...Chocolat Lollipop + Bunny...Hey! Look at the mice! And the birds! Hey Amy, are your decorations put away yet? ;O)

Actually, this might also have something to do with the fact that we went from this on April 14th:

That's our new car by the way, the big bad monster is gone, Yippee! So fare I have see an owl, a wolf, a few Foxes, a mama and baby moose, a few coyotes, hawks and the occasional eagle from afar.

There are also the "extreme" critters, those are the one that will double dare each other to run in front of your vehicle to impress their "bros" so fare their has been one ermines, one jack rabbit and two deer ( not so bad considering deer are EVERYWHERE here) but never close enough to have a good look.

Yesterday was different. The sun was shining for the first time in a week, I was alone in the truck because the 2 other car poolers were already off for the weekend and the radio was playing really good tunes. I was enjoying my ride home when all of a sudden a bird came swooping down low from the left and I let go of the gas ready to slam on the brakes to avoid hitting it, totally ignoring the fact that their were 3 cars behind me on the highway. I did not have to brake though. My buddy the Merlin, known in scholarly circles as Falco Columbarius just wanted to surf the wind trail from my truck. he made a 90 degree turn and rode the wind next to my truck window giving me a spectacular view of his belly and wings.

He stayed with me for maybe a quarter of a mile and then he was gone. Coolest thing I ever saw, I felt totally blessed :O)
Danielle , Alberta, Canadahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17011337810557457339noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3764024931770390575.post-60034545082609181812008-04-09T13:55:00.017-06:002008-12-09T02:32:41.823-07:00A word on my new headerI am planing to change the layout and design of my blog in the near future and was looking around for random wild flower images when I found this one on Canadian Geographic and fell in love with it. I thought only my mom and my friend Amy were reading this. I'm very happy that someone out there is willing to read this despite the awful spelling. Welcome all of you.

This said, I have to tell you, the last bunny picture was not mine. I found this picture on Hop Scotch and it belong to Faisalee on flickr. Since I have had a few comments about this picture, I just wanted to set this strait. I'm very sorry if I caused any confusion. The other bunny pictures are mine.Danielle , Alberta, Canadahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17011337810557457339noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3764024931770390575.post-51028676220318138212008-03-22T12:44:00.010-06:002008-12-09T02:32:41.950-07:00Harump! Yes well, the cat at my thongue...no that's not it. The dog ate my homework...hum! that's not it either. The bunny ate my transfere wire! That's it! I am not kidding you. She somehow jumped on to the computer table and nibled away at the wires. Most survived but there were a few casualties, the transfere wire for one and the mouse wire also perished. Now Fred will get his darn wireless mouse... Oh! well...

Anyhooo! Pictures as soon as I : a) find another wire or b) find my memory stick and see if I can transfere them to that.

Until then, here is a complementry cute bunny shot (not of the perpetrator)

Luv u
Danielle
Danielle , Alberta, Canadahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17011337810557457339noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3764024931770390575.post-77309166917438777992008-03-21T14:45:00.014-06:002008-04-10T13:59:12.812-06:00Who! So it seam’s I’m pretty bad at this, five posts and then nothing for a month. In my defense, it has been VERY busy around here.

First, we have bought a house. It all happened pretty fast, our landlord told use he was selling the condo and was giving use first bids to buy, we discussed it and decided to see if we could afford it so we got ourselves a mortgage broker. We were told we could afford the condo but needed a bigger down payment and our landlord did not want to wait, so that sort of died in the egg. Then, a week later, our neighbors and friends told use they were putting their house up for sale in the upcoming month, back to the broker we went. Finally we made an offer, they accepted, the bank accepted and so we have ourselves a house. Well actually not exactly because if they are not posted as they expect to be (they are both in the Forces) the whole deal is off and we will need to find ourselves a home…but lets not think about that, we are very confident on this so all will work out.

Second, I have just finished my first quilt top, Yeah! Pictures will go up next weekend and it might be finished by then but I have pictures of all the steps, so Amy don’t even try to imply that I bought it and am tiring to pull a fast one on you ;O)

This was SO fun. I have been talking about quilting for so long. My maternal grand-mother and a few of my aunts were quilters but by the time I got interested in sewing and later quilting, grand-ma was dead and my aunts to old and plagued with arthritis to teach me. I do remember my Aunt Gertrude hand quilting a rainbow motif on a quilt she had made using a quilting loom my grand-father had made for my grand-mother but I was little then and was more interested in worms and kitty cats to care.

Over the years I have often thought about quilting but was to intimidated to try it. Besides, I Had no one to teach me and did not have the time for quilting classes so the idea kept lingering in the back of my mind and nagging me. I had amassed a pretty big stash over the years from my various sewing projects and had to leave that behind when we moved her last July; we only took our cloths and a few odd pieces of furniture to save on moving expenses. It literally broke my heart but I only took my favorite pieces and gave everything else to goodwill.

Then, while surfing the net I found some people who changed my life changed my life! LOL! No mom I DID NOT join a sect, I wish you would stop thinking that…:OP. Please allow me to introduce you to my surrogate grannies:

First there was granny Heather whose fabrics I used for my very first quilt.

She led me to granny Anna Maria.

Who in turn led me to several other cool, talented amazing ladies around the web and made me realize that quilting is not such a granny thing to do. And their fabrics are so beautiful and bright!

And look at this lady, her name is Joanna Figueroa and I love her and want to live in her studio so I can get up at night and sew millions of things from her lovely fabrics.

So I bought some fabrics and put myself to work. And I will post some pictures soon so you can see the results, Antoinette would be proud I think.

Luv you
DanielleDanielle , Alberta, Canadahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17011337810557457339noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3764024931770390575.post-19173089211845965862008-02-15T16:23:00.011-07:002008-12-09T02:32:42.539-07:00The Girly RoomSo Maya is fine. Please not two in one week!I'm worried for Maya.

Yesterday, when I got home from work I open her gate but one hour later she was stile in her room looking sleepy. I fixed her dinner at around 7h30 as usual and called her but she just stayed in her box. Finally at around 8pm she came out and hid behind the curtains in le living room, she had not touched her food at all, not even the endive lettuce!

I picked her up and started petting her and she just let me, no fuss, not trying to get away, no Harrumph! She just let me pet her for close to an hour. I was reluctant to go to bed without having seen her eat and tried to feed her the bunny crack but even that did not get her attention.

I finally went to bed at 10h30 because I was driving this morning and had to get up at 5am. When I checked in on her this morning she stile had not touched her food, not even the apple Mr. L. slipped her after I when to bed.

I picked her up and she just curled up close and gently gritted her teeth. This is so bad. I was standing there wishing I hadn't kept the stupid work truck last night so I could call in sick and take her to the vets. Its only 7h30 here, I got to work 30 minutes ago and I'm waiting until 8am to call the vet and see what to do. I have a syringe of pain killer left from when she was spayed in December but its probably gone bad; I almost gave it to her anyway this morning because that's what got her eating again after her operation.

This is killing me.Danielle , Alberta, Canadahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17011337810557457339noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3764024931770390575.post-5303609974432366282008-02-03T10:23:00.003-07:002008-12-09T02:32:43.265-07:00Goodbye Sweet BunnyYesterday we had Oscar put to sleep. I made an appointment for Friday. I figured it might be some sand in his urine or maybe an infection and that some antibiotics could help. The vet touched his blather and felt a bump so he took an x-ray. He found a stone the size of a large marble as well as sand taking up almost all of his blather. That picture up there was taken by my son, It`s the bike trail near our condo. I`ve posted a few links and will be adding to these as I go along.

I guess I’ll start by introducing myself. My name is Danielle; I was born in Quebec, Canada and have recently moved to Alberta. I don’t like my job because it promotes global warming and destroys the environment but it pays well and at this point in my life I am stepping all over my conscience so that our family can finally have a home.

This will be a bilingual blog. I may post in English a few days and then suddenly decide to post in French; this may be so that my French speaking friend can read a particular entry or just because I feel like it. As the title says, this is a blog about everything. I could have made it a blog about bunnies, or about sewing and crafts, or about the state of the world or about wild flowers but that would have been too confusing because really, I can’t stick to just one subject and I would have been incoherent.

Why am I doing this?

HA!

I don’t know.

Hope you’ll be around when I find out.
Danielle , Alberta, Canadahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17011337810557457339noreply@blogger.com0
